Bikeability
Bikeability Scotland cycle training equips children with essential life skills. Pupils learn to ride confidently as well as gaining independence, social skills, and a sense of wellbeing.
Currently we deliver two levels of Bikeability Scotland training within schools:
- Level 1 – Usually delivered in P5. Riders learn how to prepare for a journey, check their bike and equipment are safe, and develop control skills, good observations and decision making. They also learn the importance of sharing space responsibly with other people. Training is completed in a traffic free setting.
- Level 2 – Usually delivered in P6. Takes place on single lane roads with simple junctions and moderate traffic, after a rider has successfully demonstrated level 1 skills. Riders learn to make good and frequent observations, communicate their intentions clearly to other road users, decide on and use the most suitable riding position, understand priorities on a road and make decisions about when people wait and when people go.

Thank you to all schools who completed Bikeability this year. 100% of schools across the region have now participated in the Bikeability programme over the past 2 years. Which means every p7 class that finished up in June has been offered the opportunity to participate in Level 2 (on roads) Bikeability. In Academic year 24-25, 74 schools across the region had Bikeability with over 1300 pupils completing Level 2. We are hoping to keep this momentum going and it would be very beneficial for your school to have trained Bikeability instructors within your staff to be able to deliver the programme “in house”. The one day Bikeability Scotland Instructor (BSI) course will allow staff / volunteers to facilitate Bikeability levels 1&2 at your school. Contact bikeability@dumgal.gov.uk for more information.
Teacher Bikeability Training
The “Bikeability Scotland Instructor” course allows members and any school staff/ parent volunteers to run Bikeability level 1&2 at your school. The benefit of having your own trained staff means that you can decide when training will be completed and not relying on external instructors availability. The course is run over two afternoons with each session being 3.5 hours with the course having practical and theory elements. Please get in touch if you are interested in a course for yourself or other staff members so that a training day can be arranged at your school.
